Vic Open 2014 – Final Round

After some different weather the first three days, the fourth and final day of the Victorian Open held at Thirteenth Beach Golf Links was played in ideal conditions. Congratulations to Matt Griffin and Minjee Lee for winning the 2014 Victorian Open. Matt survived a three hole play off with Matt Stieger in a thrilling finish with some outstanding golf. Griffin successfully birdied the 18th hole in each of the sudden death play offs. Congratulations to Thirteenth Beach Golf Links on a beautifully run championship on two wonderfully presented golf courses. Here is a selection of photos taken on the final day of play. Clifton Springs Photoshoot

Spring is here and golf courses have become a thrive of activity with the warmer weather.  For over two years I’ve been taking photos of the Clifton Springs Golf Club. Last summer proved to be quiet frustrating with mother nature not playing ball and withholding the much needed water to get the course looking at absolute best.  This year the rain has been plentiful and the course is looking fantastic. Here are the...

Sharing a spread with Jack

It is not often you can say you were seen next to Jack Nicklaus in a golf magazine.  But now I can, OK let me boast… I mean explain.  Barwon Heads Golf Club needed some photos taken of their fabulous new short gamer area.  One of the photos required a golfer to be in the photo, originally Alex Fenton from the advertising agency Fenton Stephens was to be the golfer, Fenton Stephens designed the advertisement. We arranged for the photoshoot but the weather didn’t play ball. In the meantime the deadline approached, after a week of inactivity with poor weather and schedules that did not match, I decided to step in and be the golfer.  This meant setting up the tripod and putting the camera on a 10 second delay timer. The photo used in the advertisement shown below was an interesting one. The tripod was set up on a small dune, the process went like this. I’d set the camera, click the button and then race down into position, pick up the club and chip the ball. Sounds easy enough, but 10 seconds goes quite quickly. The final photos were dispatched to Fenton Stephens and then a couple of months later I’m flicking through my Golf Digest publication and to my delight saw a very small version of me on the same spread of a slightly bigger and slightly more well known Jack Nicklaus. Ok so you can’t see my face and even my Mum wouldn’t recognise me, but I know it is me and that at the end of the day is all that matters. This is the actual photo of me on the Barwon Heads Golf Club short game...

Clifton Springs Photoshoot

This project with Clifton Springs has lasted over a year, my first journey to the course was back in September 2011. So why has it taken so long? The answer is not short but can be summed up in two words “mother nature”. Many golf courses are really photogenic at certain times of the year, depending on the type of grasses they use on the fairways the course could be perfect at the height of the summer months (if you have the water). Clifton Springs suffers from the same issues as many country golf clubs, they don’t have an over abundance of water. So during the summer months the water is used sparingly, which creates another challenge. The main dam on the new 6th hole looks amazing when full with water, but not as aesthetically pleasing when half full.  So for the 5th and 6th holes the best photo opportunity is when the dam is full but the grass is less then perfect. Here are a selection of photos taken on a number of trips at the end of 2012. I still need another morning shoot to finalise a few holes which will look their best in the morning light. But the last 3 to 4 weeks have been so dry the course no longer looks as good as it normally does, so the waiting game...

Golf Action Photos

Here are a few golf action photos taken from the Heidelberg Pro Am early this year and also the 10th Anniversary Carnivale golf celebration day at Thirteenth Beach also earlier this year. It is always interesting looking at the different positions golfers get themselves into wild trying to hit the little white ball.  ...

Photoshoot at Barwon Heads Golf Club

Finished doing a recent photoshoot at Barwon Heads Golf Club and this time it wasn’t on the golf course.  For this project I was mostly working inside the stately Clubhouse.  BHGC has just recently refurbished some of their accommodation rooms, and needed some photos to show the world how good they looked. While I was there I also captured some photos of the board room and the conference room which can be used all types of events.  The views from this room are gorgeous looking over the 18th and 7th fairways. Here is the image gallery.  ...

What a difference the rain makes

What a dry summer, you can always tell how dry a summer it has been by looking at residential gardens in-particular how brown their grass is. Golf Courses are no different, even when you have an unlimited amount of water to keep the course green it is never as beneficial or productive as a good dump of rain.  At the start of February I spent a few evenings at 13th Beach Golf Links photographing the Creek course.  What struck me was how dry it had become, not surprisingly they had not had any decent rain for 5 or 6 weeks.  A week after the shoot they had some really good soaking rain.  Two weeks later I ventured onto the course and the difference the rain made was instantly obvious. It was like a new course, it looked amazing. Have a look at these two photos taken of the ninth hole on the Creek course.  Taken only 3 weeks apart, the lush green fairway has benefited greatly from the rain.     Here are the results from three different visits to the course on the 21st, 22nd and 24th of February.   My Favourite Images   The whole gallery from the...

Advertising 13th Beach

As a photographer I love to see my shots in print, as a designer I love to see great photos married with a clever idea. Recently I had the opportunity to tick both the boxes, my other business Brown Ink Design has been given the opportunity to do some marketing work for 13th Beach.  Opportunities like this we do not take lightly, for me this was a first.  The first time my photography had opened up the door to doing advertising work, normally is it my design work that opens up the door to my photography. The brief was simple, create an advert to appeal to the golfer, show them how beautiful 13th Beach is and highlight the membership offer. Successful advertising campaigns make the client money, successful advertising also has a simply message. This is particularly important when we use press advertising. When you read a paper you are bombarded with thousands of messages, so how in this environment do you get your advert to stand out? A designer would say, make the advert visually impressive enough to grab attention.  A photographer would say, use amazing photography. An advertising creative director would say have a strong offer or message.  Well because of my background I think you should marry all of these ideals into one advert, so that is what we did. And I’m happy to say the client 13th Beach were very happy with the resulting membership applications. Here is the half page advert which appeared in the Surf Coast Times.                 Click on the image to view larger...

The Sands Torquay Photoshoot
